The Doorbell, as it is aptly named, is not your typical doorbell. It is cylindrical in shape, supported by a mounting post and plate, and protrudes an inch from the wall. The doorbell features a water-resistant, removable cylindrical glass shade, illuminated by a replaceable LED that sheds more light than the average doorbell. Precision machined from Aluminum, the doorbell has a patina that simulates oil-rubbed bronze, giving it a sophisticated look.
Peters' design is unique in its form and function. The cylindrical shape and the projection from the wall, coupled with its illumination, pique curiosity and invite interaction. The realization that it is, in fact, a doorbell, often elicits a response of "Oh, it's a doorbell. Cool!" from guests.
The doorbell is machined on a precision CNC lathe from 6061 T6 Aluminum Rod. It features a 3mm thick Borosilicate cylindrical glass shade that has been sandblasted inside and out to diffuse the light source. The LED used is a low voltage G4 9-18VAC 1 watt 30lm 2800-3500K LED with a built-in driver and an Aluminum housing with a 340Deg. beam angle plastic lens. The fixture is dipped in a proprietary water-based solution to give it an aged Bronze Patina and then sprayed with a two-part super hard UV resistant Semi-gloss lacquer.
The design process was not without its challenges. The initial designs required extensive machining, making the production costs higher than desired. However, a dream led Peters to alter the design to one that could be manufactured on a CNC lathe, making it more affordable. The small scale of the fixture's body also posed a challenge in finding the right switch. After several iterations and prototypes, Peters settled on a slightly larger miniature switch that required a bit more force to make contact, improving the tactile experience.
The Doorbell has been recognized for its innovative design and practicality, winning the Iron A' Lighting Products and Fixtures Design Award in 2012. The award is given to well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements and contribute to a better world. David Alan Peters' Doorbell certainly fits the bill, revolutionizing residential doorbells with its unique design and innovative technology.
